Argentine Football Association

The Buenos Aires-based Argentine Football Association organises the main divisions of the Argentine football league – from premier to local leagues and regulates competitive football activity in Argentina. It also manages the Olympic squads, women’s football, youth and futsal.

It was established in 1893 and is the oldest football association in South America. A second association was formed in 1919 organising local championships but the two leagues merged into one in 1927. Although most clubs in Argentina turned professional, some clubs preferred to remain amateur and more informal. More recently in 2017, the Association created a new entity which organised the organisation of the Premier League only. Today significant football associations in the country are regulated by the Argentine Football Association.
