Over 100 million bets during Super Bowl LVII

More than 100 million online bets were reported for Superbowl this weekend. This was an increase of 25 percent year on year. The research was gathered from 23 regulated states where online sports betting is legal. Over the weekend 7.4 million new online accounts were created, an increase of 32 percent.

Locations around Glendale Arizona analysed

The study was conducted by GeoComply, a company that specialises in the research of location data, device integrity and identity checks and fraud reporting. The company also analysed data from more than 8,000 iGaming accounts spread over 100,000 locations around the Glendale State Farm Stadium in Arizona where the Superbowl final took place in the weekend.

Forecast by American Gaming Association

American Gaming Association proprietary research delivers some key insights and released predictions prior to the match.? It suggested that around 50.4 million people (20 percent of the adult population) would place a bet on the Super Bowl.

Highest volume of bets recorded in New York

GeoComply co-founder and CEO Anna Sainsbury said “Super Bowl LVII was a record-breaking event. GeoComply data reveals that Americans’ interest in legally betting on the Super Bowl has never been higher. Huge swaths of Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs fans hailed from legal sports betting strongholds.”

It was noted that a proportion of fans of Kansas City Chiefs are located in Missouri where sports betting is not yet legal. 250,000 betting attempts from Missouri with operators in regulated states were reportedly blocked.? The highest volume of bets were recorded in the state of New York.

Cybercrime resulted in more than 140,000 reported fraud attempts that were blocked during Super Bowl weekend due to ID theft, account takeovers and hacking..

Sainsbury explained that?“Online sports betting may be a target for fraud, but because every bettor must verify their location, the industry has the data to stop it before it starts.”
